The Suffragettes

    

Introduction

During the nineteenth century, women slowly gained civil rights.  They wanted more control over their own lives.  In 1900, however, they still did not have the vote.

In 1903 Emmeline Pankhurst founded the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU).  Her 'suffragettes' tried to win votes for women by force.  They did not succeed, women were only given the vote in 1918, after the First World War.
